What follows is a copy of a periodic posting to the newsgroup comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi that explains how to post to the newsgroup. It is very similar to the instructions which are automatically e-mailed to each participant, the first time that they post in the newsgroup. The difficulty being, of course, that if one posts to the newsgroup with an invalid e-mail address, the moderator-robot cannot send you these instructions by e-mail. Therefore, this is posted periodically to the newsgroup (about once per week) and also maintained on this web page, so that those who are unable to receive the instructions by e-mail will hopefully either find the instructions posted here, or in the newsgroup.
Subject: HOW TO POST TO comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi From: <usenet@thinkspot.net> Approved: <usenet@thinkspot.net> Newsgroups: comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi Supersedes: <627979.1010415601.95@kserver.org> Message-ID: <576157.1011020395.91@kserver.org> Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 14:59:55 -0000 HOW TO POST TO comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi is a self-moderated newsgroup. This message explains how to APPROVE YOUR OWN POSTING. If you do not approve your posting, it WILL NOT APPEAR in the newsgroup. This system was approved by a popular vote of 200 to 30 on October 5th, 1996. It is the result of a democratic election held according to USENET guidelines. Before posting to c.i.w.a.c, please look at the following resources, which will often answer your questions without the need to post at all. Yes, this will take a moment of your time, but every post you make to the newsgroup consumes the time and effort of other readers all over the world, and your cooperation is essential to make the newsgroup useful for everyone. Thanks! * * * 1. Nick Kew has prepared an excellent list of CGI Frequently Asked Questions (with answers, of course). You can find this at the following URL: http://htmlhelp.org/faq/cgifaq.html 2. The World Wide Web FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions, with Answers) answers many, many questions about the World Wide Web in general. See the following URL: http://www.boutell.com/faq/ 3. Many CGI programmers use Perl. If you have a general Perl question that isn't really a CGI-specific question, check out the Perl FAQ: http://language.perl.com/faq/ 4. If you don't know what a URL is, this fairly technical newsgroup probably is not for you. Check out the FAQ posting regularly made to the newsgroup comp.infosystems.www.misc to learn more about what the web is and how to use it. If you're not clear on what a newsgroup is or how to find a group that discusses your interests, please check out news.announce.newusers, where information about newsgroups in general is posted regularly. 5. Read the newsgroup first to see if your question has already been answered. You can also try searching the newsgroup's archives at: http://groups.google.com/groups?as_ugroup=comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi 6. If you do post to the newsgroup, give as many details as possible. After you post, read the newsgroup for a week or two to see all replies to your posting. If you must, ask for responses by email and offer to post a summary if others are interested in the answer to your question. 7. Remember, USENET newsgroups are based on the idea of mutual aid. USENET only works if we put as much into it as we get out of it. Good luck with your CGI work. * * * HOW TO APPROVE YOUR OWN POSTING: If you have already submitted an article to the newsgroup, but have not yet approved it, then it should have been saved by the moderator-robot in a database. Using the same e-mail addresses as were on the article you already submitted, send a single e-mail to authoring-cgi@boutell.com. The SUBJECT of your email should consist of this word, and NOTHING BUT THIS WORD: approve The robot should then approve your article and post it to the newsgroup. HOW TO CANCEL YOUR OWN POSTING: If you have already posted an article to c.i.w.a.c, but after visiting the websites listed above, you decide you do not need to post it to the newsgroup any more, you can cancel your article. Using the same e-mail addresses as were on the article you already submitted, send a single email to authoring-cgi@boutell.com. The SUBJECT of your email should consist of this word, and NOTHING BUT THIS WORD: cancel * * * "WILL I HAVE TO DO THIS EVERY TIME I POST?" NO! *Only* the first time. This system does away with the old complaint of not knowing where or what the Frequently Asked Questions list of the newsgroup is. It is *not* censorship. You won't hear from it again unless you post from another account. "I HAVE A LOT OF ACCOUNTS. THIS IS ANNOYING!" Relax, there's a way to avoid it! Put the following word in your first posting from any account, somewhere in the body, on a line by itself: passme And your first posting from that account will be automatically approved. * * * Thanks for reading this message. Your cooperation is what makes USENET newsgroups useful for everyone. - Tom Boutell comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi self-moderation service Posted and maintained by Sheila King <usenet@thinkspot.net> on behalf of Tom Boutell.
