Mrs. King is a Mater Dei alumna: class of '79. She attended the
University of California, Irvine
and graduated with a B.A.
in German in 1983. She spent her senior year at UCI in Goettingen,
Germany as part of the UC "Education
Abroad" program. Her year abroad was financed by the
Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarship Program from Rotary
International. Yes, she does speak fluent German.
Mrs.
King started teaching at Mater
Dei High School in 1983. Initially her part-time assignment
consisted of German I and Algebra I. But in 1984 she went full
time and also began teaching Geometry. Since 1985 she has been
a full time math teacher and has taught all of the following courses
at one time or another: German I, Algebra I, Honors Algebra I,
Geometry, Honors Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry/Algebra
II combination course (no longer offered), PreCalculus, Honors
PreCalculus, A.P. Calculus and A.P. Computer Science.
The highest math course Mrs. King had taken, up until 1988, was
first year Calculus. But since she hadn't taught anything higher
than Algebra II up to that point, it was pretty much O.K. However,
she began to be curious about higher math. In 1990 she returned
to school, taking second year Calculus during the summer at Cal
State Fullerton. The following summer she took Linear Algebra
& Differential Equations and calculus based Probability. In
1990 she enrolled at California
Polytechnic University, Pomona as a conditional master's
program student in Applied Mathematics.
She expects to finish her Master's in Applied Mathematics in
Fall of 2000. It has taken a long time to complete coursework
while working full time and raising a family. If you're interested
in exactly what courses she has taken, check
here.
She is currently working on the introductory phase of her Master's
Thesis, and expects to post some info about it here in the near
future.
She has been a member of NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) and
OCMC off and on over the years. She attends conferences and seminars
regularly (usually at least one per year) and spends a lot of
time reading about and discussing mathematics education in the
newsgroup k12.ed.math.
She is also a member of the Mathematics
Department part-time pool at Cal Poly, Pomona. She taught
Math
105 there during the summer of 1993 and will be teaching there
again this year.
