Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
- What does "nc" mean on the grade

and returned?
- Where can I find out more about your classroom and grading
policies?
1. What does "nc" mean on the grade
reports?
nc = not counted. It does not mean no credit and it is not
equivalent to a zero. Because I sometimes choose randomly which
students homeworks I will grade, I use the "nc" mark
for those students who were not selected. I also use it if I
excuse a student from taking a quiz, which can happen in the
case of long term absences due to illness.
Since homework is assigned daily, I am unable check off all the homeworks I assign.
At four homework assignments per week and approx. 100 students, that would be
400 assignments per week. So, here is what I do instead:
Some days I collect all the assignments. Some days I don't collect
anyone's. Some days I draw names out of a coffee can. (I have each
student's name on a little slip of paper inside a coffee can. I draw
seven names randomly on the days when I use this method.)
Each student will have their homework collected a different number of
times. One student might have their homework collected 30 times during
the quarter, another student 35 times, another one 25 times. This is
enough times for me to get a good estimate of the student's homework
completion rate without collecting all assignments.
For a student whose homework was collected
30 times, their homework percentage is computed out of 60 possible
points ( 2 pts per homework ). For a student whose homework was
collected 25 times, their homework is computed out of 50 possible
points. I have to enter all the assignments into my gradebook
program, so if I collect Homework #10 from only 7 students, the
other students in the class receive "nc" on that assignment.
It is simply as though the assignment never existed, as far as
their grade computation is concerned.
I cannot tell you if your son or daughter
has done all the assignments, since I do not collect them all.
However, if her homework percentage is 100% or very close to it,
then I would bet he or she is doing them all.
2. How often do you update the grades online?
My goal is to update grades once per week. Well, that's my goal. Everyone
needs something to strive for.
If you send me
your e-mail address, I will send you an e-mail when I update
the grades online. Perhaps this will save you having to check
back frequently and finding that there has been no update.
3. How long until quizzes and tests are corrected and returned?
Chapter Tests, which are usually given about every three to four weeks, take me about a full
week to correct and return. Quizzes, which are shorter and usually given once per week, take from
one to three days to correct and return.
4. Where can I find out more about your classroom
and grading policies?
My classroom and grading policies were handed out to all students in the first week
of school. They are required to keep this copy in the front of their notebook. I also have
these handouts available online. You can view them here:
