Here's what's new at Sheila's Page:

This page is no longer maintained and is of historical interest only. Some links on this page may be broken.

Last updated August 13, 2003

Well, I have now installed Gallery as a means of easily maintaining photos on my site. Here is the old, pathetic photo link: Photos.

Here is the new, improved link to Gallery (which is now the Photos link in the left-hand navigation menu: Sheila's Pics.

So, we will try to be better now about providing new pics from time to time.

A brief update: Not much new on this site. I continue to support the Gypsy Mail script. While I am no longer teaching high school, and not even college at the moment, I am spending more of my free time on family and leisure activities. With my full-time job as a Service Rep for FutureQuest, Inc., that doesn't leave a lot of time for updating this web site.

This past week I have made some updates to the Faq-O-Matic on the k12.ed.math web site, which I maintain as the moderator of that newsgroup.

OK, this is pretty pathetic. Over a year without updating this page. I've made a lot of changes and done a lot of new stuff during this year. I just haven't mentioned it on this page. Let me hit some of the highlights:

  • One thing I'm especially proud of is Gypsy Mail. This is a Form Mail script written in Python. It is sort of a culmination, at this point, of my forays into Python and CGI scripting. I see more great things to come on the horizon.
  • I put up a newly updated Site Map, just within the last couple of weeks.
  • In installed a Site Search engine, at about the same time that I updated the Site Map. I haven't made it available on all the pages of the site, yet. I'm working on it.
  • I just completed a survey of Computer Science teachers on the issue of Case-Sensitivity in computer programming languages.
  • The last two-three weeks of this past school year, I had my AP Computer Science students working on Python. They had already had a full school year of programming in C++. Here are the resources that I put together for them.
  • I updated my summary of text editors. I will be making more updates to that page, soon.

As for me, personally, I have resigned my position as a teacher at Mater Dei High School. The 18 years I spent as a teacher there, plus the 4 years as a student, were enjoyable and rewarding ones. Unfortunately, the long commute and the demanding job with the many hours required took its toll. I'm looking forward to working closer to home this year, and being able to be home with my children more. I will be teaching part-time at Cal Poly Pomona in the Math Department.

I've been trying to bring the Computer pages more in line with the look of the rest of my site. Adding some materials for AP Computer Science Teachers, as well.

I've just put up a new website, www.k12groups.org. This site is about the k12.* hierarchy of newsgroups. It gives information about the k12.* hierarchy, offers resources for participants in k12.* newgroups who would like to assist in maintaining FAQs or web pages, and recounts the history of K12NET and the origins of the k12.* hierarchy.

Well, there's a new look at Sheila's Page. Lately I've been feeling like my site looked kind of dowdy. So I redesigned the whole look. Not something to decide on too quickly, as it takes a while to go through and edit every page and make it conform to the new design, on top of the time it takes to create the new design in the first place.

Well, I'm pretty pleased with it. There may be some individual pages that are not current with the new design yet. I'll get to them soon!

I even posted a new photo on the website today. Wow.

My son, Jonathan, did a web page on the Battle of Gettysburg for a school assignment. He is a 14-yr old 8th grader. He learned how to code the HTML himself. (That was our weekend project for March 18-19. Thank goodness for Web Monkey! at http://www.webmonkey.com)

I touched it up a bit and put a counter and guestbook on the site for him, but most of it is his work. Would you like to check it out? Maybe drop him a note? Go here: http://www.thinkspot.net/Gettysburg/

Xmas photo of my kids.

I've been able to spend some time with the family over Xmas break. Also, correcting and prepping for that return to my students on Monday Jan. 3, 2000. Sadly, my father-in-law passed away on Dec. 30, 1999. We will miss him dearly. Bye, Eddie.

Lately, I've decided to go ahead and add a few Computer Links, even though there are not many, nor well organized at this time. I figured, if I waited until it got polished enough, I'd end up waiting forever.

My latest big time waster, was spent on trying to learn enough about ProcMail and Qmail to install the STUMP RoboModerator to help me with moderating k12.ed.math. I'm trying to document this endeavor here.

I'd like to put in a good word for my web hosting company, FutureQuest.net. I started hosting with them in August, and am very pleased so far. I spend a lot of time chatting with fellow FQuesties on their community bulletin board. Visitors are welcome to stop in there and chat.

If you find any broken links on my site let me know. Consider jotting something in my Guest Book. You don't have to fill in all the fields (such as e-mail and so forth) if you don't want to.

If you'd like a bit more help finding your way around, check out the Site Map . It's just a rough outline, but does give you some good navigation tips.
