Sylvia... wouldn't bodyfat have something to do with it, too? I am very lean. BF about 12-13%. The heater has been broken recently at our pool (fixed now, finally) and I was having a hard time dealing with it. although it was warmer than the ocean waters I swam in this past summer.

I've been swimming in the San Francisco Bay year-round for nearly 8 years and love it. No wetsuit. Just me, a swimsuit, cap, goggles and earplugs.

It's all about taking it slow. Get in for 5 min, then 10. Slowly build up each day by 2-5 min and see how you do. If you're feeling quite hardy, start at 10 or 15 and work your way up. Have warm liquids available to drink as soon as you get out.

Ice baths - meh. I can't say I'd recommend. It's about MOVING your body in the water and specifically being fully horizontal and not sitting up.

The water in the Bay this morning was 49.3F. We're spending about an hour in the water these days - sometimes less, sometimes more.

To Sheila - I swam with Rob across the Great Salt Lake this summer. He is fantastic!

I loved the La Jolla Rough Water Swim. I expect I will do it again next year. It was a little tough swimming in that cold water, but I prepped for it by training without a wetsuit on many of my OWS. Anyhow, next year, maybe I will use some of the tips in this article for part of my preparation. I've seen other people mention that they do the ice bath thing. I also follow this young man who lives in Pismo Beach and does open water swimming year round. His blog is here:

Here is another triathlon swimming video, that discusses how kicking is important for the swim:

Interesting comment about your getting calluses, as six weeks into getting mine, I find that my long-time calluses are completely disappearing, even the tenacious horny looking ones on my heels.

I love my VFFs and they are my footwear of choice 99% of the time (that other 1% is when I'm with my mother -- you make that woman mad at your peril).

Cool. Another tool I've used on my iPhone is the Cyclemeter app, which supposedly will do the same type of tracking as a Garmin GPS. However, I've found it tells me I'm a good 1+ mph faster than my Garmin says, and I've found the Garmin to be fairly reliable and accurate. So I don't like using the Cyclemeter app too much because of that.
