Warmup Exercises for Running

It’s a good idea to warmup and cool down before and after your runs. Can’t say I always do this…probably should. Also good to incorporate some stretching into your routine. I like yoga, actually. But even stretching immediately after the run is good. Sometimes I have periods where I’m really consistent and do this after all my runs for a while. Then I get away from it. I’m away from it right now, partly because my schedule is just so packed. I’m starting to notice IT band issues on the left again. I’m going to have to get the foam roller out and use it more. Ugg.

Anyhow, here’s a very nice warmup video from the StrengthRunning.com blog. You might want to view the whole blog post that goes with the video, as it has extra information and details.

Massage your Back – BackIt Ball

I think I want one of these BackIt balls. Looks like a medicine ball, weighs 8 lbs, but intended for massaging your back. You put it under your neck and roll on it, roll it down your back. It can also be used as a medicine ball for other exercises as well.

I saw it in a video on the GoSwim.tv website that was about practicing dolphin kicks for butterfly. They used the ball for the drill.

I suppose in the meantime, until I can bring myself to order this and part with some money, I could just try rolling my back on the foam roller. This ball sure looks WAY better, though.

Yoga Pose – Squat

Here’s a link to an article on Active.com on how to do the squat pose from yoga. It’s a fairly detailed description not only of how to properly do the pose, but also of the benefits of the pose. Sounds like a pose I should be doing regularly!
